Food Studies: A Multidisciplinary Menu

Call for Papers
University of Adelaide International Food Studies Conference
Deadline for Abstract Submission: 1 October 2013

The emerging field of Food Studies has been formally in existence for at least a decade, and its rise in popularity worldwide has been accompanied by growing scholarly and popular interest in eating and drinking habits and practices. Food Studies is a globally-recognised interdisciplinary field where food serves as “a ‘lens’ through which to view, explore, analyse, and interpret society in the present as well as the past” (Encyclopedia of Food and Culture 2003). This conference aims to bring together scholars who apply diverse methods and approaches, generating exciting interdisciplinary dialogues that respond to a range of core questions central to Food Studies scholarship. We invite further contributions in response to the following questions: what has been the impact thus far of Food Studies, both on other research fields and on our understandings of our past and present food habits and cultures? What have been the field’s main achievements and unfulfilled promises? What are the core issues related to eating and drinking in contemporary society, and what can we learn from the past? What are the most fruitful and productive questions and methods to pursue in future food studies research? Therefore, we welcome papers on topics including, but not restricted to, the following:

Food/gastronomic heritage
Diet and culture
Food studies as methods
Drinks and drinking
Contemporary debates on food and consumption
Food and travel, migration, and globalisation

We invite paper and poster proposals from any perspective concerned including historical, geographical, anthropological, literary, and sociological approaches, from postgraduate students, scholars, and experts as well as independent researchers. The conference language is English.

Abstracts of approximately 500 words along with full contact details should be sent by the deadline to foodstudiesconf@adelaide.edu.au

Organising committee: Barbara Santich, Rachel A. Ankeny, and Laura Prosperi (Graduate Program in Food Studies, University of Adelaide), Kelly Donati (William Angliss, Melbourne), Jean Duruz (University of South Australia), and Deborah Lupton (University of Sydney)
